GBSI Climafic Initiative

MCST is pleased to announce a new research partnership project with The Green Based Strategy Institute (GBSI), a South Korean based & youth-led policy research institute. We will support GBSI in their work researching climate finance pathways for a just, resilient and inclusive maritime transition in Pacific SIDS.

As contributors to the “Climafic” initiative we will share insights from the entirely unique Pacific maritime scenario. Our existing work indicates that the established climate-finance modalities do not fit our isolated, remote and lesser-developed region, and that bespoke finance mechanisms are required.

Overall, the research will propose an innovative climate finance model to support a just transition in the maritime sector of Pacific SIDS, drawing on Korea–UK contributions to bilateral and multilateral climate finance.

It will examine practical financing pathways for green electrification, sustainable maritime infrastructure, and shipping decarbonisation, with a focus on enabling vulnerable island economies to access the finance needed for a resilient low-carbon transition. This research will directly feed into our own research to support implementation of the PBSP Charter.

We look forward to working with the GBSI team and the other project partners on this project.
