Cruise Liners – are they good for Aotearoa and the Pacific and what more do we need to know? A Literature Review

This paper discusses what a true cost benefit analysis for the cruise liner industry would encompass, in response to an economic analysis of cruise tourism in Aotearoa New Zealand released by the NZ Cruise Association and Cruise Lines International Association Australasia. Whilst the focus is on Aotearoa, the paper also considers the limited literature available on cruise tourism for Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu, and draws on global reports and information. The review finds that there is insufficient data to substantiate the industry’s claims of the economic benefit they deliver. Rather the literature review concludes that the economic, social and environmental costs to local communities is likely to far outweigh any economic benefit that cruise tourism delivers.
