Lloyd’s Register (2016). Article: Low Carbon Pathways 2050

In December 2015 at the Conference of Parties 21 (COP 21) in Paris, under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), nations committed to keeping the global mean temperature increase to well below 2°C of pre-industrial levels by 2100, while aiming for 1.5°C. This means an imminent peaking of total CO2 emissions, and the need for substantial reduction of annual CO2 emissions from then on. To provide some context, depending on the exact pathway taken, this is likely to require net zero emissions by approximately 2035 (1.5°C) and 2070 (2°C). This article explores pathway scenarios for the maritime sector.
