Widening the Wake

Micronesian Center for Sustainable Transport, College of the Marshall Islands

The Pacific Wind Hub is a collaborative project between MCST and the International Wind Ship Association (IWSA) to support the development of wind propulsion in the Pacific region.

Harnessing an abundant, accessible and clean energy resource that Pacific Seafarers have utilised for generations, wind propulsion offers Pacific Island Nations the most affordable, appropriate and sustainable technology for a resilient maritime future.

Our work integrates proud indigenous seafaring traditions and local development priorities with the best of global innovation and knowledge networks to advance proof-of-concept projects in the Pacific region.

Overall, the Pacific Wind Hub serves as a Pacific-centered nexus for wind shipping, offering capacity building, knowledge exchange, and project management services.

How we seek to advance wind propulsion

We work with the IWSA to advance proof of concept projects in the Pacific region – our role is to integrate proud indigenous seafaring traditions and local development priorities with the best of global innovation and knowledge networks.

We seek projects that are tied to a strong business case and/or meet the societal needs for the most remote and climate-vulnerable communities. In our work we highlight the fact that a full Pacific transition to decarbonised shipping does not occur in isolation or with piecemeal fragmented projects – it instead requires a holistic approach that creates an ‘enabling environment’ for transition.

Enabling a Pacific Maritime Transition

Our research has identified four key factors that are required to create the enabling environment for a Pacific maritime transition:

  1. Regional maintenance capacity
  2. Robust government regulation
  3. Functioning data ecosystems
  4. A strong maritime education system

To activate the enabling environment nine Pacific Nations have formed the Pacific Blue Shipping Partnership (PBSP), an ambitious country-driven initiative for a large-scale climate finance investment to catalyse a regional transition to sustainable, resilient, and low carbon shipping.

The Pacific Wind Propulsion Hub is designed to:

1. Support Maritime Decarbonization: Act as a center of excellence for research, development, and advocacy in the adoption of wind propulsion technology across the region.

2. Foster Collaboration: Unite maritime organizations, companies, and stakeholders to share best practices and technical expertise.

3. Promote Education and Training: Build capacity through training programs, educational services, and Indigenous knowledge integration.

The Pacific Hub will lower barriers to finance and services while creating equitable opportunities for all stakeholders in the wind propulsion sector. As the second wind propulsion hub established by IWSA and regional partners, this initiative represents a significant step in shaping a sustainable shipping industry while addressing the unique challenges of the Pacific’s maritime nations.

About the International Wind Ship Association (IWSA)

The International Windship Association (IWSA) is a member-driven, not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting wind propulsion solutions for commercial shipping. Our mission is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and fuel consumption by advancing wind propulsion technologies and integrating them into the global shipping industry.

IWSA Mission:

  • Promote: Highlight the economic and environmental benefits of wind propulsion.
  • Educate: Serve as a central hub for information, educating shipowners, operators, shipyards, ports, governments, and the public about wind propulsion.
  • Network: Unite like-minded organizations and individuals to share ideas, technical expertise, and market information.
  • Incubate: Secure funding, foster project collaboration, and support research and development.
  • Facilitate: Establish common approaches for project development and advocate for policies and incentives to retrofit existing ships and build new wind-powered vessels

IWSA Vision: A sustainable and efficient global shipping industry that significantly reduces its environmental impact through the adoption of wind propulsion technologies.
